I see some decent paying tower and banner ads so I don't see the reason for the Caselemedia pop up. Just saw some others too.
I know a lot of times a webmaster will put a bunch of different types of ads up as a means to test which ones are most intrusive and which ones pay the best (there is no hard and fast answer). At least he's not using interstitial ads....like IGN.
