Khuutra - If you want to bring the constructs of language into this, then an acronym can be used for many things at the same time. We are talking about something that is extremely subjective. In other words, you can use GOW call whichever game you want. Which brings me back to my original post:

You can go ahead and start using GOW for Gears. It's your human right. However, that will NEVER, EVER make it so.

Yes, it will. It is inevitable that it will. That is the nature of language.

There are still accepted meanings in certain contexts, because certain contexts necessitate different modes - different languages, if you will - separate from other contexts. There will always be situations (like PS3 title discussions) wherein meanings will differ - perhaps GoW will still mean God of War in these contexts.

But in the larger, inter-console discussions, the usage of the acronym will win out, and if Gears of War triumphs in that context then the meaning of the acronym in the larger dialogue will have changed.

Its interesting that your posts reminded me of the feminist movements around the world. Chairman became Chairperson and it did happen over the bitter objections of many, many people.

The reason why I made this thread was because I saw a conflict in the use of the acronym. Infact, its that very conflict which inspired me to make this thread to see what the opinions of other members on vgchartz were.

Thank you for your responses, I found them extremely interesting reading and they were well above my highest expectations which I held for this thread.

@Others, I love you too, hugs and kisses.
