All Star Oceans take place in the same general timeline of events - like Phantasy Star (pre-PSO) did. Star Ocean has never had a spinoff, only remakes.
And for the record on Star Ocean sales:
Star Ocean (SNES):
- 76,000 - First Week VGChartz - 105,678
- 176,000 - LTD VGChartz - 0.23m
Star Ocean 2 (PS1):
- 374,000 - First Week
- 700,000 - LTD
Star Ocean 3 (PS2):
- 386,000 - First Week
- 533,000 - LTD
Star Ocean: First Departure (PSP Remake of SO1)
- 115,000 - First Week 111,976
- 205,000 - LTD
Star Ocean: Second Story (PSP Remake of SO2)
- 90,000 - First Week
- 143,000 - LTD
There are a few ways to look at it. On one hand, it's definately going to underpreform vs. SO3. However, on the other end, the PSP remakes did abysmal, and SO4 on 360 already outsold both PSP remakes' first week numbers in 1 day, and is assured to pass the SO2 remake's LTD numbers in 1 week. So looking at the most recent titles, SO4 did very well on the 360, regardless. It's just when you compare it to SO3, it doesn't look as stellar.
More than likely, I think we'll see a PS3/X360 Director's Cut, since the DC of SO3 did very well. But that's IMO.
And Max, since you have no idea about Star Ocean, I'll give you a hint: The PSP versions are as much Star Ocean as the FFIII and IV remakes on DS are. Take that as you want, but that's the same level they are on. Phantasy Star Portable has been mentioned as well, which is an apt comparason too (and Phantasy Star Portable sold ~700,000 on the PSP).
