Yes a sale is a sale. And I personally have purchased multiple PS3's and 360's. I'm just trying to see if anyone knows of anyone who tracks these numbers. 2 years ago I would have put it off knowing this as an unsubstantial distraction. But over those years I keep seeing more and more use of PS3's in this fashion. Sony's use of it for marketing and code development is not hurting them in my opinion.
But I am no longer of the opinion that # of consoles sold is as significant as the # of consoles that are viable in the market.
I don't care about Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo for their own sake. I care about this in how it applies to the % of consoles that can be viably sold to. I know RROD took out plenty of 360's so if anyone has %'s/#'s for them thats cool, but leave it for another thread.
And if numbers about failure rates and numbers concerning consoles for distributed computing can be combined than that would give publishers everywhere a more quasi-decent idea of their potential customer base.
