Curious about popular opinion on this issue, i punched "Why the GameCube failed" into Google, and the first hit was, strangely enough, a fairly rational critique of what went wrong on the software and marketing sides of things. A blog post from January 2007
It's really a well-written article. Would that bloggers could write such well-founded articles about the Wii

From the blog...
"Bottom Line: The GameCube was a failure not because it failed to deliver revenue, or great games, but because it was a machine that didn’t know what it was. It struggled and stammered trying to find an identity for itself, because when you got right down to it, it didn’t have one. It was “safer” than the N64’s bold defiance of industry trends had been. In following the herd, Nintendo lost their way. And once they lost the vision, they tried to make up for it with cables and bongos.
I love the GameCube. But it failed to live up to what it could have been. And that’s as tragic as anything that could happen to a little purple lunchbox."
...Now replace the Gamecube with PS3 and Nintendo with Sony and the cables(connectivity) and bongos with Home and Sixaxis...You have what IS happening to Sony. It's just striking to think about.

I respectfully disagree with the blog's statement because I saw the PS2 being more diverse than the GC with DVD playback, EyeToy, SingStar, etc. So I also respectfully disagree with your conclusion because I've come acroos more and more consumers that do not know of the PS3's versitilities. It's the perceived PS3 price tag that's hurting sales. And Sixaxis should not be a valid factor with your logic since the Wiimote (both motion controlled) has taken off with casual and non-gamers.

I think people who feel the price of the PS3 is the main factor for it not outselling it's competiors are in for a rude awaking when the proposed price cut comes. The boost isn't going to be as "earth shattering" as people suspect. The overall bottom line applies to the PS3 in that Sixaxis was an afterthought, and Home is an attempt at trying to bring more of the XBL experience to PS3 users.
...I agree with your perspective on the PS2, like the N64 it want against what everyone else was doing at the time, and thats making something for everyone. But, the overall statement applies in that Sony lost their direction with the PS3.
The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!
...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?
