Thats really a tough call as the source material is actually similar in some cases to the Transformers movie. There is over 15 different Transformers TV series some of which are nothing more than Transformers vs Decepticons while searching for something that came to Earth millions of years beforehand. So really having the movie based around humans finding an object that was sent to Earth millions of years ago and have a robot war on the planet is actually pretty damn close to the anime.
So while Bay is a douche, you can also say the source material sucks too since its perfect for mr explosion happy douche bay.
