Nintendo's systems have dropped in total sales since the NES. The Gamecube was simply the low point. The reason for that is that Nintendo began to focus on making games for it's core consumers rather then expand it's userbase.
Nintendo could not compete with Sony head on. They had more factories, employees, assets, and could sell things at a lose. Little Nintendo could not do this, so Sony was able to run circles around Nintendo. This is why Nintendo changed the rules to where they have the advantage.
