You have to be a critical reader to get real value from reviews. And the value you can get from reviews is often from the critical parts -- not the "I give this game a 7/10" parts, but the "the control was poor because" parts, or "the core mechanic works well if you like..." parts.

These aren't difficult to pull from reviews. You have to look past the bias and the preference for a given genre. A good reviewer will at least know the genre well, so if you read a review from someone who doesn't compare the game to other milestones in the genre or doesn't like the genre, find another review.

Of course, I'm not a JPRG fan anymore.  I liked them when they were awesome (the early final fantasy games) but lost interest later.

 

 Thats exactly what i do, i dont believe everything on what they say until i do some research or like you said be a critical reader. after reading the review on  redsteel (cause of all the mixed reviews) i did some research and bought it cause i thought it had potential.
