Comparing 2008 to 2009 might misstate the situation.
Last year, Nintendo was much more supply constrained as it had airlifted shipments in for the Christmas rush. This year, it had consoles to sell in January.
Sony has a stable market share and is working toward making a profit. It's position is not enviable. But it does not appear to be in imminent danger -- unlike some other parts of the Sony empire.
