I knew it was looking bleak, but not quite that beak. Japan receives a nice chunk of wealth from it's exports, and I understand with the econmic situation in the world, this has really hurt them. Sadly, if we spiral downward, so do they.
Too bad they're having a hard time finding enough farmers to produce crops for their population. Having a large percentage of their food come from imports hurts them as well.
They really need higher food self-sufficiency in times like these. Tough asking being that the rural areas having dwindling populations and most of the young move to cities like Tokyo. The average farmer in Japan is near 60!
Think I went on about all this because it ties in with the economy. Something.
