Cloud wasn't even remotely emo in FFVII. People need to hop off the bandwagon of conformity and formulate their own opinion of him.

Cloud was a slightly angry, non caring person for a huge chunk of the game. He rarely showed his true feelings like a real "man" is suppose to do(right?). The only time he actually broke down and cried was when his LOVER DIED!!!!!!! You get that, DIED!!!!!! You people love to pretend as if you are so hard that nothing of the like could ever phase you. The person you love being slayed right in front of you is enough to make anyone just a little bit sad.

The "Emo" like persona didn't enter till Advent Children. That is because it is a very depressing time of the world. 2/3rds of the planet just got wiped out by Meteor. There is a disease spreading around that is killing children and adults alike, spreading like wild fire. People are living on the streets. He is still partially greaving over Aeris's death(you know, that really tragic one from the game). Not to mention he is also infected with geostigma so he feels he is going to die like everyone else.

Thats like fucking telling a cancer child, "MAN UP!!! Everyone has to die sometime!"
