Absolutely, you can't ever let your guard down. 100% focus at all times. It's a lot more stressful, but ultimately more rewarding.
I didn't find Rundas too difficult the second time, once I was used to his attack pattern. It's really important to shoot down all the big ice chunks he throws at you, and collect as much energy from them as you can to fuel hypermode. You can even do the same once he's hurt and starts firing at you while he's ice surfing, shoot down the small shots and collect energy. You just have to stay focused, and make the most of your hypermode when you activate it.
