Personally I think it's only a matter of time before the PS3 will surprass the 360. The real challenge for the 360 will be Europe where Sony dominated more the last few generations than any other market. I don't see other than the UK the 360 being very successful there. Sony is the only one with the name brand that could take some of the momentum away from Nintendo down the road. In Japan that's probably an automatic 8 to 10 million PS3 advantage at the very minimum.
The US is the 360's best market by far. I'd lean toward the 360 beating the PS3 here with our love for shooters and all, but even that's no lock. Anyway the 360's time is now. The PS3's time with will be 2008 and 2009. None of us has a crystal ball that will tell us what will happen, but my gut says the 360 has to beat the PS3 by 10 million just in the NA market to win worldwide sales. I think even many optomistic 360 fanboys would be hesitant to predict that.
