Do you think you could possibly come into a topic about localization of Japanese games without trying to pigeonhole Western gamers as shooter fanatics? Maybe? Please? Didn't we already have the discussion where it's revealed that the West consumes far more JRPGs than Japan does?

It's not so much about West being shooter fanatics.  It's more about some people feeling their masulinity challenged in the West when Japan-West cultural clashes occur.  A cultural clash occurs also in Japan when they can't relate to characters like Master Chief and Marcus Phoenix.

I'm fairly certain that has only happened to Vesperia, not western-eastern culture clashes(?). Why would you even say that? If westerners felt challenged by eastern games, LO wouldn't be near topping 1 mil, NG2 would have sold very crappily, and Resident Evil 5 will flop miserably. All have lots of Eastern in them, with the exception of Resident 5.

No, I didn't say Eastern games - just certain styles.  Tales of Vesperia and Valkyria Chronicles were both to many jRPG fans, top of the genre titles.  Unfortunately, our review system didn't acknowledge that, but that's a different topic all together.  In general, Western gamers have a prejudice toward certain styles (animated styles like VC and ToV).  Japanese gamers, generally, have a prejeduce toward Western-developed games.  Of course, I think the latter is worse.

Tri-ace most likely saw the sales of LO and then saw the sales of VC/ToV outside of Japan.  They learned a few things.  The two cultures have a different view on animation as well.  In EU/America, companies like Disney pigeonholed the animation genre as being "for children."  Japan had a different cultural development around the same genre.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
