Trouble is, I don't see any expansion slots on my Wii.

With the Wii on its stand (vertical), look just under the corner with the little grey "Wii" emblem...could that be a covered up expansion slot?

i believe that's a cell [battery] to power the internal clock. i have to admit the Wii keeps time a hell of a lot better than my GC did, every month the GC clock was out by about 5 minutes.

That's exactly what it is, there's a little tray in there that holds the battery.  Nintendo would not require users to use a mini-phillips screwdriver to install an expansion, it would be a simple snap-in module like the N64's memory expansion slot.  The Wii doesn't have anything like this.
