I have a friend who pretty much stopped gaming after N64/PS1 who played most of his games listening to his own music.... he had 2 old TVs in his room, one especially old one hooked up to a PS1, and the N64 to the main one. Apart from 1 game (Frogger) he used the PS1 as a CD player most of the time, so while playing F-Zero X he would put a CD in the PS1 and turn the sound down on the TV playing F-Zero X..... Or if the game had the option just turn the in game music off and keep the effects.
I won't be doing that with Madworld though, I am not a fan of the music but I think it suits, and I have wide ranging tastes so I will probably grow to like the music while playing the game (though I wouldn't buy a CD of it)
