First rule of quoting a person, wherein one uses quotation marks, is to actually quote them. Do not paraphrase.

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," said Newell. "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a 'do over.' Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.'"

Nothing he says here is particularly objectionable. Sony did lose track of what customers wanted, Sony did lose track of what developers wanted, that have been many people who suggested Sony should recoup their losses and try again, and if Sony said what he suggests they should, they would go a long way toward repairing their image.

Given that it's an interview where he gave the answer on the spot, I think he did fine.
If you ask me, that was the sentiment that got sega to canning saturn and creating DC which was an excellent console in it's own merit but look what happened. Something tells me he'll be the first to run far away if sony had canned the ps3 to develop another console. When it's not one's money or time, it's easy to pull statements out one's ass. Who would trust sony again if they had canned the ps3 to produce something else. I still think his wording was rather strong but I don't thnk we'll ever agree on that one so I'll leave that aside.

I've got to agree with Pristine20 on this one.  Newell isn't suggesting that they simply hunker down, ride out the generation, and do better next time -- that would be sane.  No, he's saying Sony ought to kill off the PS3 and immediately come out with something new.  That is madness.  I don't know if he just pulled that out of his ass without thinking it through, or is that ignorant of consoles, or maybe he didn't really mean to say exactly what he said; but trying to launch a new console at this stage would destroy Sony both financially and in reputation.  It would be at least as damaging as Sega's famous hardware death spiral IMO.

The first part of his comment may be correct, and he's entitled to his opinion on the rest, but his opinion as stated is not very smart (IMO).

Thanks Final-fan, most of these people who have no points just come out talking ps3 fanboy this or that, jealous of x and y marvelous games that valve created. Very funny indeed. Valve never developed a game for PS before. I don't even know why any so called PS fan would miss him.
