I took that as meaning that Metroid was going somewhere else. Despite the fact that Nintendo R&D1, the old team responsible for Fusion and Zero Mission (and Super Metroid before it) is long gone, i do think they could put an EAD team on a 2D Metroid

 

Retro is doing something else, but that doesn't preclude a new Metroid now, but i do think that this is just a fanservice of some sort
