"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," said Newell. "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a 'do over.' Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.'" Nothing he says here is particularly objectionable. Sony did lose track of what customers wanted, Sony did lose track of what developers wanted, that have been many people who suggested Sony should recoup their losses and try again, and if Sony said what he suggests they should, they would go a long way toward repairing their image. Given that it's an interview where he gave the answer on the spot, I think he did fine. |
Did Sony lose track of what customers wanted? Or is that in your opinion? Certainly, 20 million other people don't believe that Sony 'lost track'.
Did Sony lose track of what developers wanted? Or is that just Gabe's opinion? Certainly, plenty of other developers actually enjoyed working with the Cell and some developers have even achieved wonderful things with it. Certainly, those developers got 'what they wanted'.
Sony is on the verge of making profit per PS3 sold. And most certainly will be making profits hand over fist in 2009 on the PS3. Why should they recoup their losses and try again? Microsoft had to denote Billions to fixing faulty hardware. Should they scrap the 360 and go back to the drawing board and try again?
Wait so the PS3 is hurting Sony's image? Or is it the price tag? (Outselling the 360 for 9 of 12 months in 08' until ironically a price cut doesn't seem like a system with an 'image' problem)
It is far more likely that as long as the PS3 has a decent price compared to it's competitors it will sell and sell well. Really at the end of the day, Sony wanted to win the format war. By adding Blu-Ray to the PS3, they increased the entry point on the PS3 and really lost out on some sales. Regardless, it's better for them in the long run to win the format war and they achieved that goal.
Gabe (And his defenders) try to pass his statements off as fact and they are far from it. The evidence spits in his face.
