Three words: Donkey Kong Country Also, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe (Game Boy Color) had co-op. Of course I'd like them to do split screen like in Sonic 2, so you could go in your own direction.

DKC (which is my maybe my favorite series of all time) isn't really co-op. Two people don't play at once, they tag on and off. It was okay for moderately skilled players who might die frequently enough that both people could feel like they were actively playing. But it wasn't exactly a great game mode.
What WAS great was the Bad Buddy cheat code, and competing to beat the level by swapping yourself in. My brother and I played that sometimes. House rules: you have to break open every DK barrel if your buddy is dead. I wish they had brought that cheat back in the other DKC games.
In Sonic 2, could you play the whole game in co-op splitscreen? I remember the 2-player splitscreen races, which were awesome. But not as good as Uniracers.
The only way I could see 2-player sidescrolling work without splitscreen would be auto-scrolling. Super Mario Land world 2-3 and 4-3 with co-op would be rad.
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
