| johnathonmerritt said: No. The PS3 isn't going the way of the Dreamcast. If we go back 15 years, Nintendo was beating Sega into a pulp. Then Sony came into the picture, smacking Nintendo just as hard. This hurt Sega beyond redemption. As the PS2 came out, it had no competition. N64 and DC sales could not compare. Sega's superior competition was taken down by a stronger foe. Now, we have the Wii selling amazing, but to a different crowd. The PS3 has sold better than the 360 until their recent price cut (When launch dates are aligned). Right now, it makes since. None of the three will die. The Wii is to one audience, the PS3/360 to another. The sales of the wii are close to the PS3/360 combined. (Which are currently close to even. Sony doesn't have anyone beating them out of the race like the Dreamcast had. They are close to even with their only true competition. No one who wants an HD console is going to be happy with the Wii alone. Most of the people who want an XBox 360 already have one. Therefore, when the price cuts come along. People will massively buy the PS3. Will it sell as good as the PS2? Probably not. Who knows, though. They already have all the games they need. With proper price cuts, functional firmware updates, and a stepped up marketing campaign, it could. The PS3 has sold extremely well for the price during a worldwide recession and it still has many more years. By the time all is said and done, the PS3 will outsell the 360. If you want to ask if a console is going the way of the Dreamcast, the 360 is the most likely candidate. Everyone would agree that isn't going to happen. The only way any of the three will be taken out is if either, one of the companies goes broke (Sony of Microsoft likely), or a forth player is added to the field (Apple?). |
There is NO chance at all that the PS3 will overtake LTD 360 sales and there is NO chance of it outselling the 360 in 2009 either, to think otherwise is just being deluded,
Any move Sony make to try and get the PS3 selling more will be countered by Microsoft (they confirmed this), the 360 has been outselling the PS3 non-stop since September 2008 with the 8 million gap increasing all the time, and even if Sony do manage to cut the price I don't think it will affect sales that much as the PS3's reputation is at an all time low at the moment after all the bad media exposure since Christmas,
And in the UK PS3's have been on sale for £229 (HMV, Sainsburys, Zavvy all had them at this price) at a couple of places yet they still didn't sell that well (360 is often out of stock at these stores I mentioned), the PS3's image in the UK is very bad at the moment, game stores have the PS3 areas right at the back of the stores (game, gamestation, hmv etc) where as Wii and 360 are right at the front by the entrance to attract potential new customers, it's things like this which is affecting the PS3,
I want the PS3 to do well as I own one but I know when to be realistic on things, Sony have their head in the sand, they are in dire trouble with huge losses, PS3 sales are down year on year for the second year in a row while the Wii and 360 are higher year on year (360 100% increase in EU compared to last year),
Sony just don't have the money to turn the PS3 around as it will cost a fortune to get things back on track, price cuts, huge marketing, better support all costs money which they can't afford to do at this moment in time, catch 22 situation.....
