Having faith in Retro Studios to develop a Metroid title and then buying them completely.
Forming EAD Tokyo.

Also didn't Nintendo's earnings beat out Sony for the first time in awhile?
In terms of just the gaming division of Sony, it didn't gain as much profit as suspected. Just over $2 billion over the life of the PS2 where as Nintendo made 3 times that much in profit during the GC life (obviously GBA and DS played huge roles).
