I haven't read the thread all the way through (sorry!) so forgive me if this has been mentioned already, but while it's a nice theory IGN's latest podcast (in the opening minutes) says that this game's Wii version (at least) has been finished for a while now, while the HD versions are not.
I think that probably has more to do with the releases than your theory.
