I'll simply address your main point then - Dolby Digital 5.1 is not expensive. $20 sound cards carry this technology now, and that's for the entire retail sale. What could the specific 5.1 tech cost? $4-$5? I'd have happily paid $255 vs $250 all the same for my Wii. In actuality, I paid $300+ for my Wii (ebay). Was tired of waiting for it to be in stock.

My point is the tech is cheap enough for them to have upgraded to it, and there a lot more people with home theaters/surround sound now due to cheap home theaters hitting the market for under $100.
