Sony - PS3: JRPG success! - View Post

Here I want to show how the developer's decisions to keep JRPGs away from the PS3 is a big mistake on their part. They seemingly are hindering themselves from gaining maximum potential and delaying potential PS3 success.

Lets look at the JRPGs to grace the 360 so far....

Blue Dragon: 0.60million

Eternal Sonata: 0.26million

Tales of Vesperia: 0.28 million

Infinite Undiscovery: 0.46million

Operation Darkness: 0.01million

Enchanted Arms: 0.16 million

Phantasy Star Univers: 0.10million

The Last Remnant: 0.50million

Lost Odyssey: 0.88million

Now the ones for the PS3 so far....

Valkyria Chronicles: 0.34 million

Disgaea 3: 0.20million

Eternal Sonata:0.06million

Enchanted Arms: 0.16million

What does this Data tell us?

4/9 games from the 360 sold better then all the RPGs on PS3

2/4 of the PS3's JRPGs are late ports from the 360.

PS3's lowest selling game has sold better then the 360's lowest selling game.

Here is where it gets tricky....

Enchanted arms came out on 360 first, yet the PS3 version has sold equal if not better then the 360 version. And that was a really crappy game.

Disgaea 3 has outsold 3/9 360 RPGs while VC has outsold 5/9 of the 360 RPGs. Firstly Disgaea 3 and VC are both very niche with their Stratagy like gameplay compared to majority of the 360's RPGs. 360's RPGs are what stereotypically appeal to the HARDCORE JRPG audience. For Disgaea 3 and VC to outsell such RPGs shows that they have true selling power.

LO, BD, and IU are all permanent 360 exclusives. 2 of them are from an ex SE worker while one is from Square Enix. SE RPGs sell by name alone (most apparent here seeing as IU,BD, and LR are seen as terrible)

When weighing the facts:Sales vs Sales, Ratio, Genre, and date of release. I come to a conclusion. The PS3 sells JRPGs better then the 360 does.

Further validation of this would be WKC which is currently only out in Japan. THe game has sold approx. 400k-500k, outselling every other JRPG in Japan(from 360 and PS3). The game is set to out perform everyone of the 360's RPGs once it is released world wide(speculation).

So if the PS3 is such an RPG success, why don't more JRPG developers utilize it? They are only harming the sales of their games. For what ever the reason, it needs to change.

WKC is probably going to be the first JRPG this gen to reach a million. Once that happens there will be no denying it.
