It is a very linear experience. Each battle leads to another, with a few side chapters that you can skip or play through at your leisure. The book presentation means that you can come back to any battle or cutscene you want after playing it, so it has alot of freedom in a linear storyline for what you want to play at any given moment.
The main thing that makes VC great to me is how all of the characters that you will use or see have a personality. In a game where you can use 40 or so different characters in your squad, it's quite the feat to make each of them unique and memorable.
The story is not the best ever, but it does deal with death, racism, and war in a very well done manner.
