the superbowl and world cup finals are such spectacular events anybody should be able to enjoy them. anybody who doesn't is just trying to push themselves away from it.

wojtas: i guess the "amateurs" you describe in football would be like junior hockey players in the canadian hockey leagues (QMJHL, OHL, WHL, etc).

sadly, for many junior hockey players who can't make it to the higher leagues, the career outlook is bleak. some go to college, but seems relatively few. good thing is that community college system in north america is pretty good.

quite frankly, i like the sports system in the US better. take NBA and NFL. the majority go through college, so even those who don't make it have a degree to fall back on. MLB not as great; like in hockey or in football, so many need to go through the lower leagues (AAA, AA, A etc). maybe 10% come out of college, but again, so many players who can't make it have bleak career outlooks.

from what i know, academy football (european now) players who don't quite cut it in the big leagues also have poor career outlooks. i follow liverpool, so once a while i'll read about some once-promising lad playing in league 1 or league 2; i can't imagine what happens to those who just never made it.
