They wanted MGS4 to win, simply because they believed it was a better game. Everyone has a right to their opinion. However, it is my opinion that a lot of the MGS4 love stems from the fact that MGS4, besides being a AAA game, is the PS3's current sole justification for existance to most of the hardcore/casual audience worldwide, and thus must remain in general opinion, as one of the best games of all time.
However, if it isn't even the best game this year(which it isn't, having played several equal, and at least 1 better game this year), what does that say about the price of the Playstation 3, and those who have purchased it?
PS3 fans don't really like multiplats, you see. Most multiplats end up being worse on the PS3, or at least they have so far, and Sony fans have grown resentful. Multiplats are also not exclusives, and thus traitoress. Compound that with the amount of overhype Sony fans pile on upcoming Sony titles and you'll see their mindset. A Sony fan's "upcoming games I want" list will almost always be comprised of 50 - 100 percent PS3 exclusives(despite exclusives making up less than 10 percent of overall released games on the console). They aren't making that list for themselves, but for others to see, in order to sell the PS3. To a greater extent, pervious exclusives, like FFXIII are now a target of hate and ridicule from the same fans that once held its existance beyond the highest esteem they have for even the console itself.
The worst part is, they don't even realize they are doing it. Few do, when dealing with cognitive dissonance. It creates fierce brand loyalty, and that loyalty expands by the dollar, and can lead to inferiority complex in a worse case scenerio. It is also why we are all so sensative to videogame reviews. We don't care about the game, or our enjoyment with it. We only care how others percieve the game.
MGS4 is a great game. It had an emotional narrative. Thus it is, and shall always be remembered fondly by those it touched. However, if you put me on an island with one game, that game has to be Fallout 3. The "game" part of that game, the production values, and the experience itself,(not to mention the depth) far outweigh MGS4's narrative advantage. It's just a larger, better game in most ways, and it didn't need the power of the Cell or BR to achieve it.
That's the obvious answer that everyone else is afraid to touch.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.
