but the thing is
I didn't think ANYONE cared about Mortal Kombat anymore |
Series like Mortal Kombat and Sonic that tried really hard to be "Cool" in the early 90s ended up aging pretty poorly, but there is still a ton of people who have very fond memories of these games. When there is a crossover with another series that has amazing popularity (Mario because of the DS/Wii’s popularity, DC Universe because of recent success with Superman and Batman movies) this adds a new found relevance to these series and their old fanbase becomes interested.

ok
but surely you mean Spider-Man.....superman returns was a flop commercially....lol

Its domestic box-office was $200,081,192 (#89 All-Time) Its worldwide box-office was $391,081,192 (#101 All-Time)

Yes, but the budget was also $209,000,000. Given that the domestic box office was less than the budget, that movies are generally supposed to at least double their budget for a good profit, and that the studio probably expected more, it wasn't a success. Perhaps not a "flop," but it wasn't successful.

I have a hard time seeing how 591 mllion WW box office is a flop for a 209 million budget movie. That doesn't even count DVD sales.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X
