I quite enjoyed it, it certainly carried me for the 60 hours I spent on the game. I did not really care that the characters were similar, I used them for certain things, as they were better at certain things.
Also, can I point out that on Final Fantasy X, my tidus is a better magic user than Yuna, so XII is not the only game with the character problems
