I always love comments from people having no professional stake in the gaming industry, that read something like "3rd party developers are stupid". Its like raising a flag over your head that proclaims "I iz Jenious!"

Jeniouses should get together and start a game development studio. The results would be... astounding.

If the management of third party publishers is so great why are so many of them matching record revenues with record losses?

Why (after they have demonstrated a weak understanding of the market by ignoring two of the fastest selling consoles of all time) would you accept that they know what the userbases of the Wii and DS want when they are unwilling to listen to the existing fanbase?

They're confused by the new demographic. Its a new market. They need time to experiment, they're not "stupid".

Perhaps someone could enlighten them with the game that will capture the Wii demographic so soundly, that it rakes in the big $ for them easily. Casual Sports games? Check. Copies of successful Nintendo 1st party games, like MK:Wii? Check. Legendary IP characters that everyone knows, and appeal to families? Oops. Nintendo kinda has the ball on that one, don't they? I don't think any 3rd party publisher's attempts on the Wii, thusfar, qualify as "stupid". Far from. No publisher has even had the time to both bank on the Wii's success and actually provide a high-quality title for it (they take 3+ years to develop). Nintendo had no choice but to bank on the Wii's success, and thus... their games are polished and good.

Unless JRPGs are much less of a niche genre than everyone thinks, The Wii's heavy hitters this year will probably be from *drum roll* Nintendo as well. There will be one or two 3rd party successes, and NEXT year, those successes will get copied and changed slightly. The number of fresh new game concepts that come out of the industry each year is *really* small. Most good traditional games (which the Wii demographic shys away from too often, it seems) are just good combos of other games, and well-polished.

Do you have any real evidence that the majority of the Wii's userbase is made up of a new demographic except for the claims of (so called) "Experts" who had no ability to predict the Wii's success?

Personally, I don't know anyone who owns a PS3 or XBox 360 that doesn't own a Wii ... While this is (obviously) not a universal occurrence, I think it is fair to say that a large portion of HD console owners also own a Wii. Now, I could be wrong but I suspect that these multi console owners would buy a game in a genre they were interested in on one console if it was available on another console and it was a good game.

I know it is a crazy thought that a FPS fan might enjoy a FPS on the Wii, and that they don't completely warp into a new individual who only loves party games the second they pick up a Wiimote.
