Where in this article does it state that the Wiimote was thrown, or even let go of?
Dogs have a tendency to get in the way when a lot of people are excitable. They want to see what's happening and get involved.
Seems the owners were actually quite smart, going by how they dealt with the situation and their measures to stop it happening again.
