I'm not denying that unemployed people or people with huge unpaid overdue student loans buy consoles because they do, I just can't see the reasoning behind that. If you absolutely must entertain yourself you can get an awesome book for $1 if you look in the right places and they last as long or longer than games.

Things like that confuse me just as much as people that bitch about not having money yet they smoke.

I disagree here regarding the book.  The right GAME, and the emphasis is on GAME (not interactive fiction) could be replayed far longer than a book.  Unless the book is some reference guide to do things, then a game can provide greater longevity.

With the exception of a few games, books generally provide longer entertainment that games and there are of course the books that I've read over and over.

Also, going back to the $1 a book or even $5 at a place like Half Price Books, I could get 20 books for the price of one game.  Do you really want to pretend any game is going to keep you entertained as long as 20 books?  Sure there are those games like GTAIV that have "endless" play but it isn't endless because you do stop playing eventually.
