It was a bit over 9 hours for me.  People beating it under 8 must be damn good.

 

I think they just explore less. I beat the game in 6:40 on easy and 7:24 on normal, with most of hard done in a time that would put me in line with the other times.  Now i'm not very good at R2 but i never really walked around and just went from point A-B.
