I assume you tried to detach and reattach the guitar neck like SHMUP recommended? That's solved everyone else's problems so far. For added measure, turn off your Wii when you do this. Also, check your Wiimote's battery life (when it's dying, it often stops registering at random).

I took it off, the wii was still on... but the strum was working... just not the down strum (which is all I use... yes I am a noob) was not. thankfully walmart will let you exchage anything... I basically just walked in there said it was not working and they got me new one... I did not even have to lie... she just assumed I did not have a reciept and traded it out. So now I have a new one : ).
