Look guys don't fight agains't me, I'm not a PS3 hater... I'm just just pragmatic ...

For the Playstation brand... it is a commercial failure (not like the 360 is an outstanding success, but ...).

It has been expensive for Sony (both in terms of R&D and selling below actual manufacturing cost), that we already knew before the PS3 launched. But it also helped Sony with selling more Bravias and winning the format war.

I think the commercial success can only be judged at the end of this generation. According to Sony for the PS3 this should be around 2016. We may well see a cheaper PSThree in the near future, which may prove itself to become a huge success.

But if you don't have Sony stock or received a paycut from Sony, more relevant to consumers is the gaming success. With regard to this many agree the PS3 had the best games for 2008 and the line-up for 2009 looks amazing (not so much for the 360).

Why are Sony fans the only people who believe the 10 year plan myth?

Back in 2001 Nintendo talked about how they believed that the technology in the Gamecube would be good enough that it would be a viable platform for 8 years. Although they were correct about the technology (after all, look at the Wii which isn't much more powerful than the Wii and will be the best selling console 8 years after the Gamecube launched) it was the factors outside of Nintendo's control that meant the Gamecube only lasted 5 years.

The same is true of the PS3 and PSP ... While the technology might be good enough for viable products for the next decade, the viability of these platforms is determined by factors that are completely unrelated to the technology and are out of Sony's control at this point in time.
