"who cares about shipped numbers, sold numbers are what sets trends and shows consumer demand. ..."

If retailers do not think the PS3 will sell, they would not have ordered as many as they have. SONY cannot force retailers to buy what they do not want to sell. And what happens when the next numbers of inceased sales are reported? The previous numbers of shipped units have been sold. Makes sense.

Yea but if people don't buy them then retailers don't order them.  it starts with consumer demand, not with retailers supplying.  They both are meaningful, but sell through numbers is always superior to shipped numbers when judging consumer demand.  If demand suddenly falls the shipped numbers won't show this, we saw that with the PSP last year, and we saw MS stuff the channel before.  Shipped numbers for PS3 are normal though, about the same amount on the shelves as the 360.
