I think it will be a while before making a quick rent will replace buying a HD movie on a disc. I know some services allow you to buy movies and download them to your harddrive, but moving these movies, if you feel like bringing them over to someone to watch, hasn't been without its share of troubles do to DRM, where as a disc just plays.
The picture is also better on the blu-ray disc, not just because of resolution, but because of compression too, and you don't need to have that big a HDTV to see that difference.
For some, the audio comes into play as well, which has taken a hit on the downloadable movies, again due to compression.
And then there is bonus material of course, something some people value too.

Combine all of the above with steadily dropping prices on both players, PC drives and discs, and you (in my opinion) a combination that will stay for a long time before DD overtakes it.
