When I read survivor I was still in school and doing GCSEs so it would have been about 2000/1. But it was still a recent book then if I remember, but I can't actually recall much about the book, it was about a guy telling his life story and it was about a cult wasn't it?

Yes...and no.

The thing about Palahniuk's book is that they're less about the plot and more about satirizing modern society.  The humor of his absurdist plots is how close they actually come to the truth.

I'd like to see someone do some work on his canon.  Every book I have read of his involves someone doing major damage to their mouth or face in such a way that makes them lose their identity.  I think Palahniuk must think we're all victims of society and that the only way to become human and self-aware is to return to being an animal and a savage.  It's an interesting idea....but I wonder if he would ever practice what he preaches.
