I think, as a standard, all HD-DVD and Blu-ray players play normal DVDs, and some actually upscale.

And, I'm surprised you didn't know about the Hybrid HD-DVD/DVD combo movies. They are on the market. So, if you figure you'll eventually go to HD-DVD, you can actually buy the combo disc and watch it on a regular DVD player now. Here are some titles that take advantage of the Hybrid.
