Why? getting the region under control. Negotiations and treaties with Hamas are useless. Who are they looking for? any Hamas activist, big or small. Especially the rocket squads that are firing on Israel. Most of the Palestinian losses are terrorists, and around 50 civilians I think (UN data).
Personally, I think they are going in prematurely. We'll see many Israeli losses because they didn't give the artillery enough time to soften Hamas.
Tens of thousands of reserve troops are being called in as I type this to join the regulars.
I see this move as one to ensure conquest.
