I think they are zombie like, but not technically zombies. I think a zombie has to be brought back from the dead. I thought the zombies in L4D were just infected with a virus.
On topic, L4D is a great game. My only gripes are it needs 1 to 2 more scenarios/movies. It is way to short as it is even with the Director. Also, it could use a couple more special zombies. Hopefully that will be released in DLC. I will have to give Dead Rising a try.
