I stopped reading after "trying a new tactic".
The strategy you suggest is the same if Nintendo or M$ had kept going with GC and XB.
The idea fails, when 3rd parties aren't interested in the console anymore. Considering the market will give Wii the longest life, in similar fashion with PS2, the developers will keep supporting the Wii the longest, out of the current gen consoles. Also, as Squiliam pointed out, the competition could introduce consoles with lower production costs by having a different design.
