Consumers looking for the most powerful console will move on when new consoles are released.
Consumers looking for a cheap HD format player will probably be able to buy dirt cheap standalones before the PS3 drops its price significantly.
Consumers looking for a cheap system with plenty of games will have other choices, too. This one makes more sense than the others, but the PS3 isn't exactly drowning in third party support, you know.
Overall, I think you're trying too hard to retcon Sony's fuck-ups into a coherent strategy.
