They reason they dont advertise is because it costs money, and SCE isnt going to waste what they make of the PSP/PS2 on advertisements.
Im sure this year especially the holiday season, Sony will be very competitive, because its when the ps3 will be making money, and when they will have alot to use for advertisements.
