As at least two others have pointed out, the Classic Controller works fine in the menu. The only thing you can't do with it is rearrange channels. Though supporting a GameCube controller for it would make playing GameCube games a bit less of a hassle.
As for what updates I'd look forward to, an update that lets you transfer data currently marked as "no transfer to SD card allowed" would be nice. I mean really, it makes no sense to lock the data to the system like that.
