Oh, and Yes I would recommend FF VII Crisis Core.

Whether you should play it before or after you play FF VII I cannot say. It might be a little better if you play VII first then Crisis Core even though CC is a prequal. I think you should formulate the questions with FF VII about Zack before you find out the answers in CC.
