My only thought was that since you didn't want it to cancel immediately, it would do some auto-cancel order rather than cancel at the time you called like most probably do. I hope I'm right too, because getting charged and then calling to clear that up is probably really annoying just like this has been.

It is beyond "really annoying", seriously.
When I first signed up I thought "Hey, i'll try it for a month and if I like it i'll grab a 12+1 Month card from the VGChartz store". Then I was blind sided and hit with a recurring payment (Huh? What is the point of 1-Month plan then?).
Now after all this I am not even sure if I am going to get LIVE anymore, maybe a card every now and then for who knows what, but I will never use my credit card with a MS product ever again. They are a god damn nightmare of a company to work with. They are bottom of the barrel when it comes to intelligent customer service.
With all the money they make they can't even get someone with half a brain to talk to me on the other end of the line and do something as simple as cancel an account?
