| Sky Render said: Dragon Quest didn't catch on in the West due to poor timing. During Nintendo's first effort to bring the series into the limelight stateside (there was a massive Nintendo Power giveaway of Dragon Warrior cartridges, in fact), the RPG had not blossomed in the US and games like Mario and Tetris were far more popular. Dragon Warrior seemed a dated-looking and tedious title compared to the sleek and comparatively consistently-fast-paced Super Mario Bros 2. During the era when we were ready for a more complex sort of game (ie. late SNES/early PS1), Enix of America was going bankrupt and couldn't bring us DQ5 or 6. By the time DQ7 came along, it was too late; FF7 had stolen the American RPG audience's attention. |
hmm, thanks for the short history on that. I am really not informed on DQ, I just asked for 4 to get me into the series for 5, 9, and 10.
I think maybe now is a good time to try and bring it to the west again, FF13 is not on the Wii, the Wii has a massive userbase already and Nintendo knows how to sell a game to the west. I think DQ10 will sell 1 million in NA alone, maybe 500-750k in others... and 2.5 million - 3 in japan (gaming in general is down there)
End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)
Wii- 72 million 3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases
360- 37 million Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak
PS3- 29 million Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut
