Well, I liked DQ4DS, at least. But then, I love DQ games in general, and DQ7's style really clicks well with me anyway (if you didn't know, the DQ remakes on DS use a variant of DQ7's engine).

I have never played any DQ ever, what are they best compared to (FF, Tales, ???)

It's kind of hard to compare DQ to another series, because it's basically the Alpha JRPG series.  Meaning that most imitate it to some degree, but none really mimic it perfectly.  Basically, Dragon Quest games work off of the most basic RPG formula (turn-based, round-based combat with gradual growth of exp to build up levels and gradual acquiring of funds to buy better equipment), but have polished that formula to a shine over the years.  It's also a series marked with a penchant for random chance having a significant impact on battles, though not really out of your favor unless you try to under-level.  It's also a very "old-school" series, meaning you have to spend a fair amount of time leveling up and gathering funds (grinding, in other words).  But battles are so insanely fast-paced (another hallmark of DQ games) that 10 battles can easily pass in the time that it'd take 2-4 battles to transpire in your average JRPG.

hmm I am at the moon in ff4, makes me want to skip getting the elite onion gear for now so I can start that game : ).... lol. I wonder why they never caught on outside of Japan, I would say the art style maybe, but Dragon Ball caught on bigtime..

I hear Nintendo is teaming up with SE to really push 9 and 10 on the west, lets hope it works (like they did with Pokemon!!!)
